Virtual dressing room opens at Bloomingdale's

Now it’s possible to have your own version of Cher Horowitz’s virtual dressing room from “Clueless.”

“Swivel,” a virtual dressing room that digitally places outfits and accessories on a live image of your body, is showcased at Bloomingdale's in Roosevelt Field mall. The system, which is hooked up to Microsoft’s Xbox Kinect, takes the hassle out of trying on clothing. No more fuss over folding, hanging, redressing or reaching the maximum amount of items allowed for one dressing room is given.

Operating Swivel requires waving both your hands — it is as easy as that sounds. A customer stands several feet from the screen and moves their hand over categories such as fall trends, accessories or jewelry on the left side while the motion-sensor follows the hand for its selection. Hovering your hand over the selection allows you to pick a category.

Once a category is selected, a list of options shows up on the right side of the screen. Using your right hand, you can scroll through the options by hovering over them. The item will be superimposed over the image of your body, almost like a paper doll.

With the increase in online shopping, systems such as Swivel make it easier by allowing the option of trying items on before purchasing them from the comfort of your own home.

Hundreds of outfit combinations are possible. There is also an option to take a screenshot of the live image of yourself, with your virtual outfit, and email it.
