Michelle from Great Neck has been gardening with her parents since she was 5 years old. Now, she says, "growing heirloom tomatoes has become a bit of a passion for our family."

She sends in this photo of her weekly bounty, but fears it won't "still be good on the weigh-in date."

We hope to see Michelle -- and other tomato-growing readers -- at The Great Long Island Tomato Challenge next week. No one should let the absence of a behemoth tomato stand in the way of competing.

Winning weights vary widely from year to year -- who knows how hefty the 2013 winning tomato will be?

This year’s contest will be held at 7 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 23, at Newsday, 235 Pinelawn Rd., Melville.

Bring your biggest, heaviest ripe fruit to the event, where I’ll weigh your tomatoes personally and crown the 2013 Tomato King or Queen.
