The big storm Wednesday night turned out to be a bit overhyped, and its expected second half, coming Thursday night, has been downgraded. In any event, snow is falling and winds are whipping, so -- short of flying to the tropics -- I can't think of a better escape than hitting up a garden show. And there's no need to travel to Philadephia; we've got a couple of winners right here on Long Island.

Hicks Nurseries' annual Flower & Garden Show kicks off Friday with plenty of warmth for gardeners' struggling winter souls. This year's theme is "A World of Possibilities," with plants and ideas inspired by gardens from around the world. Visitors will glean inspiration from the way plants are used in Ireland, India, Italy, China and other countries.

Hicks Nurseries is located at 100 Jericho Tpke., Westbury, and the show runs daily from 8 a.m.-8 p.m. through Sun. 3/17.

Head south, and Dees Nurseries (69 Atlantic Ave. Oceanside) is basking visitors in its own taste of spring, with babbling brooks and colorful themed garden displays on exhibit. Their show runs daily from 9 a.m. -7 p.m., Saturday through March 17 .
