July Fourth on Long Island brought warm sun, low humidity and gentle northwest breezes — ideal for Independence Day celebrations, meteorologists said.
"We’re going to have sunny conditions and we’re looking at temperatures in the mid-80s," said Brian Ciemnecki, a meteorologist at National Weather Service’s Upton station.
On Long Island’s west, the weather service predicted a high of 87 degrees in Syosset; on the East End, in Montauk it predicted a high of 84 degrees, with temperatures on the Atlantic Ocean in the mid to high 70s.
By 9 p.m., when many fireworks shows start, land temperatures will be in the mid 70s and skies will be clear. Overnight lows will dip into the mid 60s.
Dry, sunny conditions are expected through the weekend, with daytime highs in the mid 80s and night lows in the high 60s or low 70s.
But next week will probably bring rain, with weather service models predicting cloudy days and at least a 30% chance of rain daily through Thursday.
"Starting Monday through the rest of he week, it’s going to be rather unsettled," said Ciemnecki. "We don’t know if it’s going to be a complete washout, but there’s a chance of showers and thunderstorms each day."
