Yearning for a fall festival experience for the family, but dreading the traffic and the crowds that can accompany a trip to the North or South forks? Never fear: You can enjoy a singing hayride, go moonlight pumpkin picking, and master a corn maze at these smaller, mellower farms and nurseries, all west of Riverhead: 
<h3>Take a singing hayride in Dix Hills</h3>

There’s entertainment on board the singing hayride ($4 per person), and it changes each weekend. “I had a singer with a ukulele. She was great.&nbsp;I had a singer who played harmonica and guitar. He was multi-tasking,” says Jean Schmitt, co-owner. Kids also can ride the tractor-pulled train ($6 per person) with seats decorated like six different animals —&nbsp;including a pig, a goose and an elephant —&nbsp;during the fall festival at this farm just off Exit 50 of the Long Island Expressway in western Suffolk County (if getting there by GPS, use Huntington Station in the address instead of Dix Hills). They also can&nbsp;race rubber duckies ($4 per child) controlled by pumping water in a gutter, and pick pumpkins laid out in a field (starting at $3.99 each). Traditional fall food offerings include roasted corn, apple cider doughnuts and candy apples. The festival runs from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekends through Halloween, as well as on Columbus Day. 
<h3>Giddyap in Oceanside</h3>

Kids can ride a pony ($6.99 per ride) at the Fall Festival. They also can pet and feed goats, chickens and rabbits inside the fenced-in petting zoo ($7.99 per child). And for budding archaeologists, there are two “digs” — kids can mine for fossils or for gems ($10.99 at each station). Either stones or bones will be in the sand, and kids shake out the sand using a wire-framed screen and take home what they unearth, says co-owner Adele Dee. Pumpkin photo-ops abound, Dee says, and there’s a complimentary corn maze and spooky walk. The activities are available weekends through Halloween, as well as on Columbus Day. 
<h3>Go moonlight pumpkin picking in East Islip</h3>

“You know how kids love flashlights,” says owner Mike Massina. For “Moonlight Pumpkin Picking,” from 6 to 9 p.m. each Friday through Halloween, kids bring their own flashlights to the pumpkin patch. “The pathway is illuminated, but the pumpkin patch is dark,” Massina says. The event is geared to families with children ages 12 and younger. “This is not a spot for teenagers — it’s not that kind of vibe going on here. We don’t do scary. For 12-and-under kids, dark is scary enough.” In addition, the farm stand is lit up, all the tables are lit by candlelight, and four chimeneas offer a fireside ambience. A hayride runs all evening. “The hayride cart is lit up and the tractor is also,” Massina says. Admission is $3 per person; hayrides are an additional $3 per person.&nbsp;Pumpkins and food purchases are a la carte. The farm sells roasted corn, apple cider doughnuts, pumpkin muffins, warm cider and hot cocoa, and there are food trucks out front, Massina says. The farm is open daily from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. for pumpkin picking and hayrides through Halloween. There’s no admission during the day, but hayrides are still $3 per rider. 
<h3>Race rubber duckies in Brookhaven</h3>

Kids race rubber duckies down pipes in this new game, pumping water to make the ducks move. Four kids can play at a time. They also can&nbsp;enter a big pumpkin that’s filled by blowing air and has floating beach balls inside. “The kids go in and try to catch the beach balls,” says owner Gail Glover. Both of those activities, as well as a straw mountain that kids can jump on and pumpkin bowling, are included in the $2 entry fee. Additional new offerings including a “Chicken Run” ($2 per person), which is a tractor-pulled hayride decorated with chickens, and a corn cannon that shoots pieces&nbsp;of corn on the cob into a field ($2 for three shots). Hours for all activities are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekends through Nov. 3, as well as on Columbus Day. 
<h3>Take a wagon ride through a Christmas tree field in Huntington</h3>

Take a wagon ride through the farm’s Christmas tree fields ($6 per adult and $4 per child).&nbsp;“I call it a wagon ride because I don’t put hay in it,” owner Lee Itzler says. Explore the family friendly maze ($5 per person). “The corn maze is set up to be child friendly. Adults go in and have a nice time with their kids,” Itzler says. And pick your own pumpkin (between $5 and $30, depending on the size). “You can go to Costco and buy a pumpkin. But you don’t come to places like this because you just want a pumpkin. You come for the experience,” Itzler says. The farm is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays, but families can also experience the fall offerings from 3 to 5 p.m. weekdays. Activities continue through Halloween, as well as all day Columbus Day. 
<h3>Pick a pumpkin off the vine in Manorville</h3>

While most pumpkin-picking venues have already picked the pumpkins and arranged them in a field for visitors to inspect and choose, at Lenny Bruno Farms visitors pick their pumpkins while the pumpkins are still on the vine (69 cents per pound). “That’s a big plus,” says owner Dominic Bruno. “People want to see something that’s real.” In addition, the farm offers a hay ride, a corn maze, face painting and a play area with a play tractor for a $5-per-person admission fee. There also are three bounce houses —&nbsp;one is shaped like a castle, Bruno says. There’s a separate $5-per-child admission fee to the bounce houses. The farm is open 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekends through Halloween, as well as on Columbus Day. 
<h3>Hold a not-so-scary baby bunny in East Setauket</h3>

“It’s a small farm,” Bob Benner says of the 15-acre farm he owns. “But it’s kid-sized. It isn’t overpowering.” Children can hold baby bunnies and see the farm’s three pigs and handful of sheep, Benner says. They also can take a not-so-scary haunted hayride that’s included with the admission fee of $8 per adult and $6 per child or senior citizen. Pumpkin picking also is&nbsp;available, as is taking rides in the swing hanging from the farm’s huge oak tree, Benner says. Activities are available from noon to 4 p.m. on weekends through Nov. 3. 
<h3>Be A-maze-d in St. James</h3> 
BB &amp; GG Farm &amp; Nursery, 625 North Country Rd., St. James; 631-862-9182 
BB &amp; GG Farm has a 5-acre pumpkin patch. Pumpkins are priced at 69 cents per pound. It is $10 per person to enter the farm's&nbsp;corn maze and take a hayride. “I keep it very simple here. I basically attract the local people who don’t want to go out on Sound Avenue,” says owner William Borella. Attractions open weekdays noon to 6 p.m. and weekends from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. through Halloween, including Columbus Day.

There's a high dose of haunting going on in Hauppauge. The 55-room, 30,000-square foot&nbsp;Chamber of Horrors NY is open for its seventh season through Halloween night. 
“We have three different haunts with three different themes,” says general manager Robert Frankenberg. “We redo everything from scratch every year. The entire thing gets cleared.” 
The&nbsp;55-minute experience is broken into multiple parts: 
<h3>START AT THE DRIVE-IN</h3> 
Forty to fifty people at a time&nbsp;get ushered into a drive-in styled theater to&nbsp;watch a three-minute back story film on the origin of each haunt. A skull encased in a dome serves as the host and the films are interspersed with funny horror infomercials, such as a bit for the Jeffrey Dahmer Cookware Set. 
“You are watching a movie, then you’re in the movie,” says Frankenberg. “We set up the visual just enough to give you a taste of what you’re about to experience. You learn how the villains and monsters came to be and then it’s your turn to encounter them as you enter.” 
<h3>WITNESS “SILENT EVIL”</h3> 
When a down-on-his-luck magician encounters an ancient cursed talking doll, he sells his soul for fame and power. But, the doll comes to life and begins to go on a murder rampage.&nbsp;&nbsp; 
“Evil puppets taunt you while walking by and there’s even a live jack-in-the-box that chases you,” says Frankenberg. “It’s very interactive.” 
Try and make it through an immersive room packed with all different styles of freaky dolls, some of which are … ALIVE! 
“The deeper you go in, the grungier it gets,” says Frankenberg. “You end up in the magician’s lair where things don’t go so well.”&nbsp; 
<h3>EXPERIENCE “MALEVOLENCE”</h3> 
Satanic witch hunt anyone? After a witch gets hung, she rises from the dead to wreak havoc. The scene features a 20-by-30-foot graveyard complete with moss, tombstones and a full-scale mausoleum.&nbsp; 
“There’s no lights in this haunt. We give groups a lantern to go through with,” says haunt co-owner Matt Guiliano. “The lights pop on for 12 seconds to set the scene then it comes to life.” 
<h3>CATCH “COLD BLOOD”</h3> 
Picture an Alaskan cabin village in winter where the sun doesn’t shine for 30 days and Russian vampires are on the loose in the snow. Make your way to a nearby mansion for sanctuary where a vampire hunter will provide protection … maybe.&nbsp;&nbsp; 
“These vampires are not your classic regal types,” says Frankenberg. “They are savage zombie-infused creatures with black eyes and pale skin that are highly aggressive. Every customer gets a different experience with a vampire because it’s never scripted.”

These are a few of the creepy pieces of art created by Long Island students and on display during the eighth annual “Nightmare on Main Street” free art exhibit in Huntington, which opens Friday. 
The Huntington Arts Council invited students in grades 6 to 12 to submit works&nbsp;inspired by the theme of Halloween. The 48&nbsp;displayed pieces&nbsp;were chosen from 118&nbsp;submitted to respond to the question: “Scary, silly, creepy or beautiful, what would you want to transform yourself into this time of year?” The works include digital photography, charcoal, sculpture acrylic and watercolor paints and collage. 
Julia Giles, 17, a senior at Huntington High School, used watercolors to paint the witch taking a break from flight among the pumpkins. "That's what Halloween is for me, something fall feeling and also kind of magical," she says.&nbsp; 
A costumed artists reception is scheduled for 6 to 8 p.m. Oct. 25; it's free and open to the public.&nbsp;The display runs through Nov. 16 at the Main Street Gallery, 213 Main St., Huntington. LI students from 6th to 12 grades share creepy artwork at free show

Spotlight might have just opened,&nbsp;but it’s already gettin’ creepy. The immersive art gallery/bar in Huntington, located next to the Paramount, is celebrating Halloween all month long by diving deep into the witching season with “Stage Fright.” 
“We are turning the space into a horror movie set. It’s like being inside a haunted house,” says manager James Visalli. “Our goal is to bring you out of your comfort zone.” 
HERE COMES THE HORROR 
Robert Frankenberg, general manager of Chamber of Horrors NY, was brought in to redesign the 2,700-square foot space, which features a front room with a bar and high-top tables plus a backroom lounge.&nbsp; 
The theme is based on fictitious director Mr. Crow, a horror filmmaker who’s notorious for torturing his actors with real horror.&nbsp; 
“One day he comes across the Book of the Dead. He brings it to the Spotlight to translate it and in his translation, he releases a bunch of demons that take over the place,” says Frankenberg. 
LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION! 
Spotlight will be overrun with live actors portraying ghosts, demons and zombies as well as Mr. Crow himself. The characters will pose for selfies and each night they will broadcast a scene live on Facebook. 
“The director will be talking to you from behind the camera to get his next best shot,” says Frankenberg. “He will pull a person out of the crowd to shoot a scene and ask them to show their best scared face. Sometimes you’ll even encounter a creature who wants to eat your soul.” 
The front of the house will be a different vibe from the back. Both places are prime for photo-ops and guests are encouraged to share them on social media. 
"The front is very gory," says Frankenberg. "In the back, there's a witch's lounge with giant snake heads and a demonic altar covered in skulls and moss.&nbsp;On the outside back patio, there's a funeral set up with a real coffin guests can actually take photos in." 
THEME NIGHTS 
There will be a series of theme nights coming up: Oct. 18 will be Horror Movie Trivia Night; Oct. 19 is Night of Raising Hell featuring a “Hellraiser” theme; Oct. 25 marks ‘80s Slasher Night (think movie monsters like Freddie Krueger and Jason Voorhees); sharpen your teeth on Oct. 26 for Vampires&nbsp;of New York Night and Nov. 1 closes out with a Zombie Prom. Each event starts at 10 p.m. except Trivia Night which begins at 9 p.m. A live DJ will spin and guests are encouraged to arrive in costume based on the evening’s theme. A prize will be awarded for best dressed of the night. 
“It’s all very old school horror,” says Frankenberg. “The characters can be frightening and the décor is gory. It’s not for the weak and sensitive.”

Three Simon malls on Long Island will host Halloween-themed activities inspired by characters in Disney Junior television shows, including "Vampirina," "Puppy Dog Pals" and "T.O.T.S." 
From&nbsp;noon to 2 p.m. Oct. 26,&nbsp;Walt Whitman Shops in Huntington Station will host face painting, Halloween crafts, a balloon artist and treats. The same activities will be offered from 1 to 3 p.m. Oct. 26 in the North Court at Roosevelt Field in Garden City. 
From 1 to&nbsp;4 p.m. on Halloween, kids are invited to come in costume to the Center Court at Smith Haven Mall&nbsp;in Lake Grove&nbsp;for activities based on "Vampirina" and other Disney junior pals. The first 100 attendees will receive a Character Card. 
Later, from 3 to 6 p.m., Smith Haven will host trick-or-treating at participating stores —&nbsp;look for a pumpkin in the store window. Professional Halloween photos will be taken&nbsp;from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. in&nbsp;Center Court. 
“At Simon, we pride ourselves in creating unique and memorable community events, especially those centered around the holidays,” says Ann Schultz, director of marketing and business development of Smith Haven Mall.

Coffin curious? Patrons can once again get (voluntarily) "buried alive" at Darkside Haunted House&nbsp;in Wading River, which is offering its virtual coffin ride experience again this year.&nbsp;For a mere $5, guests waiting outside the haunt can get this extra jolt of scares and selfies.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
“It’s everything you’ll experience on the last ride you’ll ever take,” says haunt owner Mike Meola.&nbsp;“Some people refuse to try it while others jump in, cross their arms and say, ‘Take pictures of me!’,” says Meola. “It’s quite an experience.” 
Willing participants get in a real coffin, lie down and the lid is fully closed. The experience goes on to simulate “the coffin going in the hearse, driving to your grave site and burying you,” says Meola. “It’s all based on sounds, smells and movement.” 
This year marks Darkside's 21st season. The haunt goes full storybook will its “Scary Tales from the Darkside” theme. Each of the 31 scenes is a&nbsp;self-contained tale based on a type of fear such as being alone, insects or clowns. Admission is $30.

Staging the haunting musical “Ghost,” adapted from the hit 1990 film romance, offers CM Performing Arts Center in Oakdale the chance to get into the Halloween spirit via some hair-raising stage magic. 
“Every time a bad person dies in the show, there are very creepy special effects and sounds of them being dragged to the underworld,” director Patrick Grossman said. 
Theatergoers can also scare up a Halloween-themed local regional theater night with productions of the horror classics “Dracula” and “The Turn of the Screw,” and the musicals “Jekyll &amp; Hyde” and “The Addams Family.”

If you “ain’t afraid of no ghosts,” visit with Joe Giaquinto, psychic-medium and paranormal investigator, before entering Deepwells Haunted Mansion in St. James. 
“I tell people about the real ghosts inside,” says Giaquinto. “They&nbsp;are going into this fun Halloween event, but they are also entering a real haunted house.” 
Instead of waiting in line for the haunt, people gather in a tent outside where Giaquinto holds a free discussion about his ghost experiences at Deepwells and answers questions from the crowd. 
“In May of 2014, I was upstairs on the second floor when I caught an image of a shadowy figure of a man that looked down the hall at me and then disappeared,” says Giaquinto. “In July of 2007, I recorded a cello being plucked in the music room while interviewing Scott Posner, who is president of Deepwells Farm Historical Society, but there was no cello in the room.” 
The question is, how do the Deepwells ghosts feel about utilizing the house as a haunted mansion? 
“The spirits get into it. They do things to let people know their presence,” says Giaquinto. “It ups the energy of what’s going on in there. It’s nothing evil, but rather excitingly spooky.”&nbsp; 
The haunt in the 1845&nbsp;mansion features the theme “Dead &amp; Breakfast” where each bedroom plays upon different phobias such as spiders, clowns or the dark. Guests pass through an asylum, execution room, exorcist room, nursery and even a live-action wake before exiting to the Trial of Terror in the woods ($20).

Will this be a good school year? Will the future include new friends? Children will be able to have their fortunes told by a psychic in a new addition to the annual Halloween Spooky Fest at the Center for Science Teaching and Learning in Rockville Centre. 
A clairvoyant and her staff will provide the readings for kids (or adults!), and the readings for children will focus only on the positive, says Ray Ann Havasy, center director. 
Spooky Fest also includes a “Not-So-Spooky Walk” through the forest, a kids’ arts and crafts area, a children’s maze and a meet-and-greet with Merry Monsters, which are friendly costumed characters. Spooky Fest 2019 runs 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Oct. 12, 18, 19, 20, 25, 26 and 27 and Nov. 2, rain or shine. Tickets are $10 at the gate for non-spooky attractions and $15 for both scary and non-scary attractions. 
During Spooky Fest, CSTL’s new Dinosaurs! and People’s United Bank Animal Adventure will have extended hours to 9 p.m. Tickets to the exhibit must be purchased separately from Spooky Fest and are $15 for adults, $12 for children younger than 10.

Waiting on line to get into a haunted house can make even the biggest horror fan scream. But at Gateway Haunted Playhouse in Bellport, patrons are entertained by strolling an outdoor haunted midway — complete with sideshow performers and a "Fear Garden" serving beer and cocktails. 
The Midway offers a mini-carnival atmosphere with a shooting gallery for prizes, fire-eating stage shows, crowd roamers like a 12-foot zombie stilt walker who will pose for selfies, and even a live-action heckler booth. 
“There’s zombielike puppet creature who talks to people and reacts to them as they walk by,” says manager Paul Allan. “Some are intimidated to walk over to him and others love it. Most enjoy seeing someone get roasted.” 
There’s the ever-popular Fear Garden where those 21 and over can grab a draft beer or a themed cocktail like the Ghoulish Delight Rum Punch ($13). Those who seek a bite to eat can visit Billie Jean’s Grill food truck or get a sweet treat like Dippin’ Dots ice cream. 
As for the main attraction: Gateway’s haunt is a theatrical horror experience — this year's theme is centered around a hippie cannibal colony seeking to indoctrinate new members ($35).

It’s not everyday you get to throw an ax — why let horror movie villains and lumberjacks have all the fun? This year at Schmitt’s Melville Asylum and Psycho Path, the art of ax-throwing is a new&nbsp;side attraction to its long-running haunted house. 
“This is one of those new crazes that’s big in the Midwest,” says manager Tony Arone. “It’s got a similar vibe to darts.” 
Five dollars gets you four throws of the 16-inch ax, with two players going head-to-head to hit the bull's-eye for points. 
For the uninitiated, the task is more about strategy than strength. 
“People make a mistake by trying to throw it as hard as possible. But then you are not getting the right rotation out of the ax,” says Arone. “The key is to let the weight of the ax do the work for you.” 
It’s essential, he adds, to be very careful and not get too fancy with the toss.&nbsp; 
“If you try to make it spin around five times, you’ll never get it in,” says Arone. “Throw it once so the head goes down and comes back up then you’ll pretty much hit the board every time.” 
Schmitt’s is celebrating its 25th anniversary with a new haunted house featuring demented patients, creepy doctors and frightening orderlies in a 30-plus room dubbed the&nbsp;Melville Asylum&nbsp;($28 admission). Meanwhile, patients who have been experimented on lie within the Psycho Path maze within the farm’s corn fields ($18).
