Kidsday: Talking to 'Godspell' actress
We saw the Broadway show "Godspell" at the Circle in the Square Theatre in Manhattan. After the performance, we met actress Anna Maria Perez de Tagle, who sang the hit song "Day by Day." The show was absolutely amazing! It was so much fun to see the actors interact with the audience.
The costumes the actors wore were extraordinary. The stage was a circle with the seats angling upward. The actors had to give a 360-degree performance.
A lot of fun things happened on the stage, but we don't want to give away all the secrets. Go see it for yourself. You'll be glad you did.
After the show we met Anna Maria, and we were so excited. She was so pretty. When we finished our interview, she even sang one of the "Godspell" songs with us. Overall, "Godspell" was extraordinary and so was Anna Maria Perez de Tagle. We would definitely rate the musical a perfect 5. Here is part of our interview with Anna Maria.
Do you help the actor out a lot when someone forgets a line?
We've had that happen before and we try not to because it's such a small theater and it's so intimate that people on the pillows and in the front row seat would be able to hear it, but it's happened before and we've had little words like (whispering) just to kind of start him.
What is it like singing and speaking to a 360-degree audience instead of just facing one direction?
I think this is the perfect stage for "Godspell," because it's also an interactive-type show. It's easy for us to go down and sing in aisles and pull somebody off. I love it because it's also very cool to be able to, as an audience member, see somebody on the other side and have them play off, like, the laughter. It's very cool, and of course the stage has these doors that we open and they have trampolines and we have stuff coming from the top.
There are lots of things hidden under the stage. How do you remember where all the different floor panels are and what you do?
I don't know how I remember them. We had a long tech rehearsal. We had about a week of 12-hour days, and so we kind of just memorized it from there. So it's kind of like second nature to us to open a trapdoor. It's kind of just mostly memory.
Do you enjoy making the audience a part of the show?
Yes, I love it. I know the audience probably hates it because they don't like being on stage. Sometimes we get some audience members who are super shy and they don't like doing the charades and the Pictionary, but then we get people who are aspiring actors and it's their Broadway debut as well.
