Northport Farmers' Market open for business
I harvested basil from 10 plants yesterday and made 3 quarts of pesto. Put it into zipper-top plastic bags, into the freezer, and I'm good for at least a month. The house still smelled of basil and garlic this morning. I love growing herbs and vegetables (and fruit, and flowers and even weeds, but that's just me), but I don't usually have such a windfall this early in the season.
If your garden hasn't produced an abundance of basil or vegetables yet, I say the next best thing is buying locally grown produce direct from a farmers' market.
Every Saturday through November 20 (except for Sept. 25 -- Cow Harbor Race day), the Northport Farmers' Market will be selling fruits and vegetables from local farms, as well as fresh locally caught fish, baked goods, pickles, cheese, flowers, herbs -- even pet treats -- from 8 a.m. - 1 p.m., rain or shine.
And the Copenhagen Bakery will be sponsoring a blood drive at the market from 8 a.m. - 12:30 p.m on Saturday, July 3. While it might seem a little weird to give blood while buying produce, why not? (Call Carol at 631-754-0690 for details.)
