Noted guide dog dies at upstate farm
A guide dog who fought alongside his owner for access to restaurants, delis and taxicabs, has died in upstate New York.
Ruger died Wednesday of old age on a farm. The yellow Labrador
was 13.
Ruger worked as a guide dog for New Yorker Kevin Coughlin for
nine years.
Coughlin got him two years after suddenly going blind from a
rare genetic condition. He retired Ruger in 2008.
Coughlin says he hadn’t seen the dog since but kept in touch
with the new owners.
With Ruger, Coughlin fought for the rights of the blind, filing
complaints with the New York City Commission on Human Rights and
the New York City Taxi & Limousine Commission when businesses and taxis turned them away.
