A busy year, 1789: The Constitution went into effect, the Society of St. Tammany was founded, and the original home that became The Maine Maid Inn was built. It took more than two centuries, but the food definitely has improved. Payal and Rajiv Sharma, who operate the reliable Indian restaurant Sitar in Huntington, have transformed the place. It has considerable potential: a combo of this old house and this new kitchen. Try the wok-fired calamari; the shrimp duo, fire-roasted and in cocktail; Asian pear salad with goat cheese; Gruyere-capped onion soup; and main courses such as the filet mignon, rack of lamb and sesame-crusted salmon. The year 1789 also is remembered for Mrs. Alexander Hamilton serving ice cream in Washington. It's a good choice in Jericho, too.

This restaurant also hosts weddings and events and can accommodate 15-150 people. Costs $59.95-$80 per person.
