Jordan Lobster Farms, founded in 1939, is one of New York’s largest lobster wholesalers, and there’s no better place on Long Island to take on a steamed crustacean, from 1½ pound striplings up to beasts worthy of Jules Verne. Jordan’s has a spacious patio overlooking the channel between Island Park and Long Beach, a comfortable dining room and a full-service seafood market if you’d like to put together a meal to go.

When I’m planning a visit to Sag Harbor, I love to arrive in time for an early lunch at The Dock House restaurant and seafood market. A cup of chowder to-go ($5.95) — laden with clams, celery, diced potatoes and a whisper of thyme — brings me joy as I savor it on a park bench, a seat that offers the best view in town.
