Amityville: Caribbean comforts

Jerk chicken at Sweet & Spicy Caribbean Cafe, Amityville
On a recent rainy night, I found a patch of Jamaican sunshine in Amityville at Sweet & Spicy Caribbean Cafe.
This is a friendly counter-service spot with a bustling takeout business. But there’s also seating for people who prefer dining in. With the lilt of reggae in the background, I settled into a booth.
I can’t say enough good things about chef Garth McNeil's jerk chicken. It was dark, smoky and deeply piquant, served with cabbage, rice and peas and fried plantains. The price? $8. The same accompaniments shared the plate with oxtails, which were tender and homey — and, at $9, pure comfort.
Sweet & Spicy Caribbean Cafe is at 179 Broadway, Amityville, 631-264-8055.
