Andel's motto is "We ain't just lox," an allusion, no doubt, to this venerable deli's first incarnation as an "appetizing" store specializing in smoked fish. Now, under the direction of Jonathan Geschwind (as well as rabbinical supervision) Andel's handles all kosher-food needs--not only sable carp, sturgeon, whitefish, chubs, pickled lox, herring (matjes or schmaltz in wine sauce) and almost a dozen incarnations of salmon, but also Hebrew National meats (pastrami, corned beef, hard salami, etc.), savory sides (egg barley and mushroom, kasha varniskas, noodle kugel), soups and salads.

They will sell you a sandwich, cater your bar mitzvah, or ship a deli-care package to your kid at college.

The quality of the food is very good, but no better than the shop's convivial atmosphere. Many customers have been coming for decades, others drive far out of their way to kibbitz with whomever is behind the counter.

Note: All the food items are kosher, but Andel's does serve dairy (milk for coffee, cream cheese to go with the lox) along with meat.
