Since Long Island cannot have too many well-appointed restaurants serving reasonably priced Italian food, Antonette's does well for itself in Bellmore.

The chef is Brian La Rose, whose cooking at the former B.D. Cool's Fish Shack in Merrick drew accolades. Here, he cooks in a traditional Italian vernacular, turning out such dishes as cuccinetto, a layering of breaded chicken and veal with prosciutto, eggplant and cheese in a chestnut sauce, as well as simpler items like chicken Marsala and eggplant rollatine.

Desserts are house-made, a sign of a kitchen that cares.
