Bad Dawgs unleashed in Huntington

Hot dogs of all ilk (Nathan's, Hebrew National, organic, turkey and vegetarian) are up for grab-and-go at the just-opened Bad Dawgs in Huntington. The first New York branch of a New Hampshire-based operation is strictly takeout — unless, of course, you want to lean on a counter and eat standing up.
That's just what I did when I bit into a big messy "Basset Hound" — an ornate Chicago-style number topped with peppers, white onion, pickle, tomato, celery salt and spicy brown mustard. I chose an organic frank on a whole wheat bun (trying to keep it healthy) and, other than the physical difficulty of getting my mouth around the whole shebang, rather liked it.
Wish I could say the same for the "litter of puppies," i.e., franks in blankets. The mini-dogs themselves were fine, but the underbaked, oily puff pastry wrappings left much to be desired.
Nothing wrong with the "naked dog," a simple Nathan's wiener with mustard.
Bad Dawgs is at 44 Gerard St., Huntington, 631-923-1201, baddawgsli.com.
