Baja Grill began as a terrific little Cal-Mex eatery in East Northport. About a year after the original owners opened this Smithtown offshoot, they sold the enterprise to a restaurant corporatation.

For awhile, the East Northport locale was called Waves; now, it has its original name back. These days, though you can get a good burrito, neither the East Northport nor the Smithtown Baja is what it used to be.

You'll start with a bowl of multicolored nacho chips and a smoky roasted tomato salsa, addictive stuff. The "smokin' chicken wrap," is an appealing choice, but the Pacific salmon wrap can have a strong fishy flavor. A fiesta salad comes topped with juicy grilled chicken and a bright fruit salsa, although the greens sometimes have water clinging to them and the accompanying pico de gallo can be vinegary.

Think of the Baja as a good place to grab an inexpensive bite that often (but not always)satisfies.
