Bay Shore breakfast: Can Peter Pan Diner fly?

Hot on the trail of LI breakfast hubs, I ended up at Peter Pan Diner in Bay Shore on a recent weekend morning. Just a few feet from the cash register was something I'd never seen before: a display table holding an array of breakfast plates, there for the viewing.
Based, in part, upon that display, I ordered cranberry walnut whole wheat pancakes. I found them a bit dense but pleasingly wholesome in flavor. Regular pancakes, though, were sweet and cardboard-like. And a Western omelet was made with undercooked (raw-tasting) onion. Best was the challah French toast with fresh fruit, done with hunks of bread that were nicely crusted on the outside, custardy within.
Peter Pan Diner is at 989 Bay Shore Rd., Bay Shore, 631-665-1788, peterpandiner.org
