Dining room at The Fish Store, Bayport

For the past 32 years, The Fish Store in Bayport was exactly what its name implied. That changed last month, when a little restaurant opened in the rear.

I discovered the place driving by, late one morning, and, unobserved, walked in and snapped the above photo. A few days later, I made it back to the tasteful sun-splashed dining room for lunch.

I can vouch for two fine fish sandwiches – one, featuring beautifully blackened Cajun catfish, moist and spicy; the other, made with char-grilled salmon, pearlescent yet cooked through. While I liked the rich lobster bisque, I wasn’t wild about the somewhat bready and bland blue claw crab cakes.

Observed on the dinner menu: such dishes as mango salsa swordfish and peppercorn crusted tuna.

On tap: local brews, such as Blue Point Pumpkin Ale and Blue Point Toasted Lager ). There are also a few wines, too.

The Fish Store is at 836 Montauk Hwy., Bayport, 472-3018, thefishstoreonline.com
