Winter approaching, you need a blanket. Ben’s Kosher Delicatessen provides one made of cabbage.
It’s the delectable coverlet that defines the house’s hefty, savory stuffed cabbage “hongroise,” or Hungarian-style. Big leaves encase well-seasoned ground beef and some rice. This tasty spin on wrapped-up meatloaf arrives in a sweet-sour sauce that will have you calling for more bread to ensure none is left on your plate.
The stuffed cabbage is $9.99 in an appetizer portion that could sub for a dinner main course. The mega-version is $18.99.
Delis, of course, are built on comfort food, from golden matzo ball soup and chicken-in-the-pot to the baked potato knish and overstuffed sandwiches. The “deli double” at Ben’s is two junior rolls, one loaded with hot pastrami and the other with hot corned beef. The true fresser will be tempted to add hard salami and/or brisket in a mix-and-match masterpiece. Figure $17.99.
