Long Islanders’ love for tacos knows no age barrier: They are as fun to eat at age seven as they are at 70. Lucky for us, the taco landscape here is fiercely competitive, and one is never far from a taqueria, cantina or food truck to meet almost every taste. The spots listed below do double duty as places to score especially creative or authentic tacos (often filled with slow-cooked meat or grilled or local fish) as well as relish a relaxed and casual meal with the family.

Taco El Chingon

Taco El Chingon (2809 Merrick Rd., Bellmore): This cheerful eatery offers a variety of tacos, that while stripped down to their essential cores, wallop with flavor. Dirty Taco and Tequila

Dirty Taco and Tequila (201 Sunrise Hwy., Rockville Centre): This taco joint offers a succinct list of beef, chicken, fish, pork and vegetable tacos. Options include a jerk-spiced chicken taco dressed with tangy chunks of pineapple, a kung pao chicken variant (pictured) topped with bits of crispy wontons, peanuts and curls of scallions, and best of all, the Thai meatball taco, featuring a rowdy mix of ground beef, coconut curry and mint. Taco Bout It

Taco Bout It (40B E. Main St., Riverhead): The cozy eatery and its handful of tables can be tricky to find -- it's behind Haiku Sushi -- but once you do, you'll be enveloped in an oasis of color. Just beyond the brightly painted walls, Oaxacan chef Alejandro "Chicki" Ramirez keeps it pretty traditional, making his own tortillas for tacos that can come sprinkled with chopped cilantro and onion, served American-style with shredded cheese and lettuce, or amped up with add-ons like pickled serrano peppers or queso. The house hot sauces run the gamut from demure to blazing, and husk-wrapped tamales, quesadillas, fajitas, burritos, enchiladas, chimichangas and tortas all make menu appearances, as does horchata and the tart hibiscus tea called jamaica. Avo Taco

Avo Taco (2340 Jericho Tpke., New Hyde Park): Order at the counter or from a kiosk inside this festive, hacienda-like dining room. The vegetarian tacos, including a version with mushrooms and crispy onions, are particular standouts -- but there's plenty for omnivores, too, plus 10 kinds of guacamole (sugared bacon and cotija cheese top one iteration) and easygoing side dishes such as grilled street corn. Mattitaco (10560 Main Rd., Mattituck): A North Fork food truck owner and a CIA-trained chef combined forces for this cozy, colorful taqueria, where cheeseburger tacos share the menu with dirty fries and grilled Mexican street corn. Try the knockout Hawaiian taco, filled with stewed pork shoulder and smoky pineapple salsa, or the stellar shrimp taco. Agua fresca, kombucha (from Brooklyn's Mombucha -- try the blood orange) and nitro cold-brew from Ace Coffee Co. are all on tap, and meals can be devoured at picnic-type tables, a long counter or outdoor tables. Mi Viejito Pueblito

Mi Viejito Pueblito (1687 New York Ave., Huntington Station): The tacos inside this neat but no-frills eatery come in nine different combos, from steak to al pastor (marinated pork) with a slice of pineapple. The cooks press their own tortillas for quesadillas, which can be filled with either chicken, chicharron (pork skin), mushrooms, cecina (salted beef), chorizo or steak, and are then topped with fresh, crumbled Mexican cheese, crema and lettuce. Verde Kitchen & Cocktails

Verde Kitchen & Cocktails (70 E. Main St., Bay Shore): This lively spot ups the ante on Mexican-style dining with finely tuned cocktails, exuberant food and considerable style. The two dining areas mirror the moment with exposed brick, repurposed wood, some antique touches, and both are looked after by attentive, committed staff. El Paso Authentic Taco Grill (787 Conklin St., Farmingdale): The tacos inside this bustling spot, templated by the owner's 60-something mother, are based on recipes from Guerrero, Mexico. They are served in an authentically Mexican style, with a shower of cilantro and minced onions, a few slivers of radish and a lime wedge. Fillings run the gamut from smoky al pastor to spicy chorizo, but a standout is the garlicky shrimp taco, which finishes with an almost pickle-like tang. More info: 516-752-1872, elpasotacogrill.com

Nelly's Taqueria

Nelly's Taqueria (356 W. Old Country Rd., Hicksville): This is the tiny taqueria that could: Once upon a time, Will Colon and his wife, Nelly Palacios, served their tacos from a pizzeria on Old Country Road, but eventually turned it into a taqueria so busy that they've had to push the counter back three times to make room for more seats (there are now about 35, as well as a newly installed bank of frozen margarita machines). They may owe some of that success to the excellent house-made flour and corn tortillas, 50 pounds of which are pressed in the back each day. Colon, who grew up in Houston, says the tacos at Nelly's are based on recipes from his family in the border city of Matamoros, Mexico -- and they include spit-roasted al pastor, which is served eight different ways. Try the skirt steak tacos (there are 12 versions of those), deeply flavorful and tender sliced meat anointed with crumbled queso fresco and punchy citrus salsa. El Mercadito

El Mercadito (519 Union Ave., Westbury): This business includes both a deli and, two doors to its left, a restaurant, both of them across from the Long Island Rail Road tracks in Westbury. The owner is from Mexico, but management is vague beyond that. What's clear is that they know some talented painters -- almost every surface of the restaurant, from booths to ceiling, is covered in vivid rural scenes, for an almost psychedelic effect -- and keep their tacos ($3 each) simple, but dense with flavor and heat. The chewy taco bistec, filled with marinated and grilled steak, is popular here, and the carnitas taco is supple and tangy, and dressed simply with cilantro, onion and wedges of lime. Cochinita Porky

Cochinita Porky (1068 Long Island Ave., Deer Park): This food truck is slightly hard to find -- it's parked by an auto body shop in Deer Park -- but impossible to miss, once you do: A bubblegum-pink rig with floppy metal ears, a curved metal snout and lights for eyes. Chef-owners (and sisters) Maidy and Katherine Estrada keep their taco menu succinct, with four to choose from. They include one of Long Island's only renditions of barbacoa tacos, braised and shredded beef. The Estradas' version is melting, gently spicy and a little bit sweet. More info: 631-894-8792

El Primo Taqueria y Pupuseria

El Primo Taqueria y Pupuseria (704 Portion Rd., Lake Ronkonkoma): The hot bar at this no-frills spot is heavily stocked with Salvadoran and other Central American stewed meats and fish, but owner José Benitez also turns out a fantastic suadero taco -- brisket boiled in spices and beer for hours, then browned on the grill and loaded onto an oily tortilla with cilantro, slivers of red onion and diced tomato. Mexican Grill 2000

Mexican Grill 2000 (703 Medford Ave., Patchogue): Both the chef and owner of this bright, perpetually bustling taqueria come from Puebla, and the tacos -- from a dreamy lengua taco to fish tacos filled with strips of fried flounder and shredded red cabbage -- taste deeply authentic. Taqueria Mexico

Taqueria Mexico (709 E. Main St., Riverhead): The town of Riverhead deserves a taco shoutout: It has not one, not two, but at least three excellent taco places. Clocking in at 14 years and counting is Taqueria Mexico, owned by Toluca, Mexico, native Rolando Mancilla. It has modest looks -- a cluttered counter, a few tables, a television overhead -- but house-made tortillas you could probably feast on alone, hot and salty and slightly charred. The kitchen uses achiote in the marinade for its addictive al pastor, which is slow-cooked in an oven until tender and served dotted with pineapple, cilantro and minced onions. Instead of chorizo, the kitchen fills tacos with jalapeño-laced longaniza sausage and occasionally has cochinita pibil, the Yucatan's version of barbecued pork that's not easy to find here. Mamey Taquería

Mamey Taquería (122 N. Carll Ave. Babylon):This unassuming little place near Babylon's LIRR station turns out tacos worth seeking out, from a peppery lengua (beef tongue) taco to carnitas, pork marinated in orange juice, garlic, bay leaf and black pepper. Children will love the crisp chicken chimichangas oozing with cheese. The house salsas are not the for the faint of heart, though, and the guacamole is especially buttery. Lucharitos Taqueria and Tequila Bar

Lucharitos Taqueria and Tequila Bar (119 Main St., Greenport): Inspired by the colorfully outfitted Mexican wrestlers called luchadors, the neon-hued Lucharitos is nonetheless a heavy weight in the taco category.
