Facing onto a Riverhead municipal parking lot that's behind the Japanese restaurant Haiku, you'll find a little Tex-Mex cafe called Blue Agave Mexican Grill. As it turns out, both Blue Agave and Haiku share ownership with Hy Ting, a venerable Chinese restaurant nearby.
Late one recent afternoon, after catching sight of a Blue Agave sign outside Haiku, I headed around back to check out the neat little contemporary space with counter service and several tables. Showcased behind the counter was an assortment of bright ingredients — salsas, black beans, and the like.
On Blue Agave's menu: cheese quesadillas ($5.75), “build your own” tacos with chicken, shrimp, steak or fish ($3.95 to $4.50) that come with salsa options such as mango, roasted corn, peach, roasted pepper and cucumber melon. There are also fajitas ($6.75 to $8.75) and burritos ($5.75-$8.95).
Blue Agave is at 40 E. Main St., Riverhead, 631-591-1922.
