Keith Kouris, who, with his wife, Nancy, owns the bakeries, said that the location is ideal, since it’s situated between the two Forks and is also convenient to home — which is in Aquebogue.
Artisan bread is what the Blue Duck name has long stood for. The bakery also makes cakes, pastries and cookies. Soups, salads and sandwiches, pre-made daily on-site, are to be eaten at cafe tables or taken out.
Recently, I had a sandwich of grilled chicken with pesto, roasted red peppers and fresh mozzarella on herbes de Provence bread ($7.99). Instead of eating the sandwich cold, I opted to have it grilled on a panino press. I liked that the chicken was good and moist but found the combination of assertively herbal bread plus pesto overwhelmed all the other components of the sandwich. Dessert, a slice of coconut custard pie, was rich yet light.
