The spiffy new Boychiks Bagels has opened for business in Port Washington, offering a selection of bagels, flagels and bialys with classic accompaniments: cream cheese (plain and flavored), smoked fish and salads.
The name of the establishment doubles down on the traditional Jewish vibe: “boychik” is an affectionate Yiddish term for a boy or young man.
You’ll also find muffins, rugelach, cookies and other pastries; cooked-to-order eggs for breakfast; deli sandwiches and panini and design-your-own chopped salads. Catering is also available.
The operation is mostly take out but there is seating for a dozen or so customers. Since Boychiks is right across the street from the town’s middle and high schools, during school hours many of the tables may be occupied by nosh-seeking students.
The free-standing building was, formerly and briefly, Port Cafe and Caterers and, before that, Bagel Boss. Owner Jeff Grossfeld also owns Bagel Boss in East Northport.
Boychiks is at 900 Port Washington Blvd., Port Washington, 516-918-9444, boychiksbagels.com.
