The rainbow spumoni at Incredible Ices & Ice Cream in Northport is transported to Long Island from the near-legendary L&B Spumoni Garden in Brooklyn. For me, one taste of the cold creamy stuff ($3 a cup) is nothing short of transporting, taking me back to the summer I turned 16.
I’ll never forget that first time I went to L&B Spumoni Gardens, which is still up and running. Everyone in the neighborhood piled into cars and drove over to Bensonhurst for a piece of square pizza (one never called it Sicilian at L&B) followed by rainbow spumoni. We ate at outdoor tables. Soon, going to L&B became a ritual for our crowd. I had a serious crush on the guy whose car I managed to find my way into. It wasn’t long before we were dating.
Today, we’re married. And, for us, the frozen swirl of vanilla, chocolate and pistachio still evokes summer nights in Brooklyn.
Now, if only someone on Long Island could replicate L&B’s pizza.
