About 150 firefighters from eight different fire departments responded to a blaze at Caracalla Ristorante in Syosset shortly after midnight Friday. Two firefighters were injured, treated and released at the scene, while battling the fire at 102 Jericho Tpke., Nassau County police said. There were no other injuries at the fire early Saturday. (July 7, 2012)

After midnight on Friday, a fire ripped through Caracalla, the Italian restaurant at 102 Jericho Tpke. in Syosset. The restaurant was closed at the time and no one was injured.

Chef-owner Vincenzo Della Torre opened the old-school Italian in 1984. He had been a saucier on the doomed ocean liner Andrea Doria during its final voyage in 1956, and the restaurant’s dining room featured a portrait of the great ship. Over the years, Della Torre hosted a number of dinners for his fellow survivors.

According to Della Torre’s son-in-law, Sergio Oliverio, no decision will be made about the restaurant’s future until the building inspector weighs in.
