Massimo Fedozzi, who earned high ratings for three major Italian restaurants on Long Island, is the new chef at Cavendish & Ross in Massapequa Park.
“It’s now Cavendish & Ross Italian Chophouse,” Fedozzi said. “It’s a neighborhood restaurant.” His new menu and more moderate prices underscore the transition from the establishment’s original, traditional steakhouse style.
That starts with already popular appetizers such as bru schetta with olive tapenade, roasted garlic, mozzarella and balsamic-vinegar tomatoes; and cornmeal-dusted fried calamari with cherry peppers and yellow squash.
Pastas and main courses are in the $18 to $28 range; appetizers and salads, $11 to $13.
Diners can expect lasagna Bolognese, rigatoni Bolognese, linguine with seafood, and fettuccine with butter, black pepper and Pecorino Romano cheese.
The house’s grilled, grass-fed New York strip steak is finished with a red-wine reduction; and the grilled Duroc pork chop with a juniper demi-glace. Saltimbocca and scallops with arugula pesto also are offered.
C&R’s $16 “signature burger” adds Brie, caramelized onions, hickory-smoked bacon, and pickle on ciabatta bread.
Fedozzi, 55, was the chef at Pentimento in Stony Brook, which garnered a 3 1⁄2-star rating in Newsday in 2014 for its creative and regional Italian cuisine. Fedozzi also won accolades for his cooking at the now-departed Vero in Amityville and Palio in Jericho.
The Cavendish and Ross for whom the restaurant is named were two explorers, respectively, a 16th century Englishman said to be the first to find a way around the globe; and an 18th century English naval commander who led polar expeditions to find the Northwest passage.
