Bacon cheeseburger doesn't begin to describe Mike's Portuguese Chicken & Deli's ground-beef behemoth, a half-pound of meat that's been stir-fried on a hot griddle with lettuce, tomatoes, onion, bacon and cheese. (Sept. 28, 2013) Credit: Barbara Alper

I’d never written about a business in Baldwin Harbor until I came across Mike’s Portuguese Chicken & Deli on Atlantic Avenue last summer. It didn’t look like much from the outside, but inside, I found owner Miguel Rodrigues’s soulful Portuguese cooking.

He cooked his spicy golden chickens in a nifty side-loading roaster and served them with freshly fried potato chips. Another specialty was something that he called a bacon cheeseburger but was, in fact, a half-pound of meat stir-fried on a hot griddle with lettuce, tomatoes, onion, bacon and cheese. The toasted bun it was served on couldn’t begin to contain it.

Fingers crossed that Rodrigues, his chicken and his burgers surface at another location.
