The new Coliseum Kitchen in Plainview is your friendly neighborhood deli — raised to the nth power. The 10,000-square-foot giant is a spinoff of the well-established Coliseum Caterers Deli in Uniondale.

In addition to a catering arm, the new Plainview spot features cafeteria-style dining and takeout morning-till-night: omelets, salads, sandwiches, burgers, barbecue, and brick oven pizza, to name just a few options.

At lunch, I was most impressed by the crusty baguettes used for sandwiches; I was subsequently told that bakeries supplying the place include the first-rate Tom Cat Bakery in Long Island City and Eli’s in Manhattan. What I liked best was a peppery rare sliced steak sandwich. Some tweaking was in order for the “Pilgrim” sandwich made with honey maple turkey, watercress and vegetable cream cheese on a cranberry nut baguette. Cream cheese on a turkey sandwich?  Quick, get out the mayo or mustard.  A slice of Margherita pizza was respectable, if not exemplary.

Coliseum Kitchen offers delivery within an hour to Plainview, Bethpage, Woodbury and Melville.
