Tuesday night on "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart," comic Lewis Black lit into a whole slew of maddening food developments: There’s no actual Kobe beef served in America; tilapia commonly passes for snapper. “Who gives a ____ !” Black sputtered. “That’s what the ketchup is for!”

But Black reserved his sharpest contempt for the huge corporations marketing products labeled “artisan.” First up, Dunkin’ Donuts, whose new Artisan bagels are, according to the chain that operates nearly 10,000 stores worldwide, “as authentic as it gets.”

At this point, Black pulled out a dictionary and read aloud the definition of artisan: “A craftsperson who produces something in limited quantities, often using traditional methods.” Then he was on to Sargento’s Artisan Blends cheeses which, he said, the company wants us to believe are “lovingly crafted by handsome peasants.” Next up, Frito-Lay, whose commercials would have you believe that its Tostito’s Artisan Recipes tortilla chips are “individually inspected by the woman from ‘Like Water for Chocolate.’”

Finally, Domino's new Artisan pizzas, which are apparently so carefully crafted that customers are not allowed to customize the toppings. “Who do they think they are?“ Black bellowed. “Gordon Ramsay?“

Bravo Lewis!
