Cook’s Scratch Kitchen and Bakery in Northport to close

Bad news for Suffolk breakfast buffs: Cook’s Scratch Kitchen and Bakery will shut its doors in Northport by Feb. 29. The Fort Salonga Road café, owned by brothers Josh and Dave Cook, opened in April 2013, and two months later received three stars from Newsday’s Joan Reminick, who included it on her best-breakfast list.

Pancakes, waffles and breakfast sandwiches (particularly the ham, egg and Gruyère on a house-made English muffin and the EC, eggs and Cheddar, on a house-made buttermilk biscuit) were all made, like the sign said, from scratch by chef Stacey McDevitt. Not that lunch was anything to sneeze at, especially the chicken bahn mi, made with roast chicken and house-pickled vegetables.

Josh Cook said he is moving to Los Angeles to take a job with the fledgling deli chain Fat Sal’s, one of whose owners, Josh Stone, was the manager at Mim’s in Syosset when Cook worked there. (One of the other owners is Jerry Ferrara, Turtle, from “Entourage.”)

If you’d like a last order of pancakes, there’s no time to waste. Cook said that if the kitchen runs out of food before the end of February, the restaurant will close its doors early.
