The Cubano, or Cuban sandwich, is said to have originated as a workingman's lunch in late-19th century Cuba. Arguments have been made, though, that early Cuban immigrants to Florida came up with the combination of ham, pork, Swiss cheese, mustard, pickles and, sometimes, mayonnaise on Cuban bread.

While its history may be cloudy, the appeal of this sandwich is clear. Here are three takes on the classic crowd-pleaser:

This Huntington gastro pub serves a melty confluence of roasted pork, ham, Swiss and pickles on ciabatta ($12).

Chef-owner Kent Monkan layers pork loin, ham, Gruyère, pickles and mustard to delectable effect ($15).

Unconventional yet irresistible, this Cubano -- a Gordon Ramsay recipe -- features ham, pulled pork, Swiss, Dijon mustard and dill pickle on a baguette ($11 lunch, $12 dinner).
