From full-bodied, velvety, malty beers to wursts of many kinds and mega-pretzels, Oktoberfest keeps on giving. The festivities formally begin this weekend in Bavaria. You'll find German specialties, and other hearty, autumn fare, at these Long Island restaurants, too. Prosit.

Das Biergarten in Long Beach will celebrate Oktoberfest on Sept. 22 and 23 and on Sept. 29 and 30. It's the eatery's fourth annual 'fest. Recommended: sauerbraten with spaetzle and apple red cabbage; crisp-skin braised pork shank with potato dumplings and apple red cabbage; wursts with sauerkraut, red cabbage, and warm potato salad; curry-spiced wursts with red curry sauce; zwiebelrostbraten, or strip steak, crisp onions, and warm potato salad; giant pretzel with mustard and beer cheese; spaetzle croquettes; potato pancakes with apple sauce and sour cream; Paulaner bier cheese soup; apple strudel; Bavarian cream rice pudding; German beers. including Paulaner Oktoberfest. Spaten Oktoberfest, and Hofbrau  Dunkel. Moderate.

Modern Snack Bar in Aquebogue prepares savory German dishes plus enough cool-weather cuisine to hold you through the holiday season. So, also bring home mashed turnips to go with your Thanksgiving dinner. Recommended: sauerbraten with red cabbage, potato dumplings, and ginger-snap gravy; roast loin of pork with potato pancakes, sauerkraut, and apple sauce; pot roast; shepherd's pie made with beef; roast duckling with stuffing, gravy, and apple sauce; meat loaf with gravy; chicken croquettes; roast turkey with stuffing, gravy, and cranberry sauce; coconut custard, chocolate cream, and lemon meringue pies. Recommended: marinated herring with sliced onion; Wiener schnitzel a la Holstein with fried egg, anchovies, and capers; sauerbraten with potato dumpling and red cabbage; bratwurst, knockwurst, or weisswurst with mashed potatoes and sauerkraut; beef rouladen with pickles, onions, and gravy; Wiener rostbraten, or pan-fried steak with German onion rings; calf's liver with bacon and onions; chocolate cream pie; Black Forest cake.
