From full-bodied, velvety, malty beers to wursts of many kinds and mega-pretzels, Oktoberfest keeps on giving. The festivities formally begin this weekend in Bavaria. You'll find German specialties, and other hearty, autumn fare, at these Long Island restaurants, too. Prosit.
Das Biergarten in Long Beach will celebrate Oktoberfest on Sept. 22 and 23 and on Sept. 29 and 30. It's the eatery's fourth annual 'fest. Recommended: sauerbraten with spaetzle and apple red cabbage; crisp-skin braised pork shank with potato dumplings and apple red cabbage; wursts with sauerkraut, red cabbage, and warm potato salad; curry-spiced wursts with red curry sauce; zwiebelrostbraten, or strip steak, crisp onions, and warm potato salad; giant pretzel with mustard and beer cheese; spaetzle croquettes; potato pancakes with apple sauce and sour cream; Paulaner bier cheese soup; apple strudel; Bavarian cream rice pudding; German beers. including Paulaner Oktoberfest.
