The big deal here at La Finca (the farm) is the “bandeja tipica,” the national dish of Columbia: An oval platter containing grilled steak, fried pork rind, fried plantains, a wedge of avocado, white rice, red beans, an arepa (corn cake) and, the icing on the cake, a fried egg. All this for $11.95. Rotisserie chicken, seafood, rice dishes, soups, breakfast. It’s all generous, all good.

Broadway, Hicksville, 516-938-7517 The specialty here is the vegetarian cuisine of Southern Indian, specifically the manhole-sized rice-lentil crepes called dosas. They come stuffed with scores of savory fillings, from mild to incendiary. Also try the thicker uthappams, seductively spongy pancakes with the fillings cooked inside the batter, and fine vegetarian curries.

Marie St., Hicksville, 516-681-8818 A fine place for a first foray into Afghan cuisine, Choopan Grill is equal parts exotic and approachable. Try the aushak, dumplings stuffed with leeks and capped with yogurt; savory curries with brown basmati rice, any of the kebabs, particularly the highly seasoned, minced chicken chapli. Vegetarians will find many options such as aush-e-nanah dagh, homemade noodles topped with butter, garlic, mint and yogurt sauce.

At the Sweet Shop, they still do, and the Zouros family is equally conscientious about the savory menu items. Put yourself on the list and they’ll call you when sauerbraten and chicken and dumplings show up as daily specials.

The East Meadow restaurant scene is a sprawling one, with the majority of dining spots spread out along Hempstead Turnpike, a few scattered elsewhere. 
Even so, it’s worth getting into your car to explore the range of cuisines the area offers. Here are five places you may want to try. 
SACRAMONE’S ITALIAN RESTAURANT, 2366 Hempstead Tpke., East Meadow, 516-513-1919 
At this quality family-owned pizzeria-ristorante, matriarch Maddalena Sacramone spends a day in East Meadow with her sons making pasta. Her fresh gnocchi in a tomato ragu is a standout. Other winning dishes include the restaurant’s light and briny linguine with white clam sauce, San Gennaro-style sausage and peppers and the “old-fashioned” coal oven pie topped with fresh mozzarella, basil and crushed San Marzano tomatoes. Jake’s is a local magnet for carnivores. Worth seeking out: the thick, juicy porterhouse for two, shell steak, filet mignon with blue cheese, and short ribs. While the amenities are few at this Dominican spot (you may have to go through the kitchen to use the restroom), the quality of the food compensates. Standouts include a first-rate Cuban sandwich, crisp, flaky empanadas and savory chicken stew mofongo, a dish made with mashed fried plantains mixed with boneless chicken and served with gravy. Finish with the creamy, opulent flan. LA NOVELLA, 364 East Meadow Ave., East Meadow, 516-794-6248 
Vibrant Italian food is the draw at La Novella, an inviting and consistent restaurant. Among recommendations: grilled calamari and shrimp, eggplant rollatine, gnocchi with Gorgonzola, penne with ricotta, tomato and eggplant and a stuffed pork chop. For dessert: cannoli. In small, simple digs, deli man Sal Gawish produces an exemplary pastrami — warm, peppery and rimmed with a frill of fat. His house-made knishes are tall, flaky onion-enriched. You can even one with pastrami folded into the potato filling. Or with a hot dog stuffed inside. Gawish’s repertoire includes all the deli classics: matzo ball soup, stuffed cabbage, corned beef and brisket. &nbsp;

Port Jefferson rocks during the summer -- sometimes too hard. But this seaside village is a great off-season destination. Browse the shops, rent a pair of skates and take a spin (or fall) around <a href="http://www.therinx.com/port-jefferson/" target="_blank">The Rinx at Harborfront Park</a>, take the kids to the <a href="http://maritimeexplorium.org/" target="_blank">Maritime Explorium</a> for a lesson in historic shipbuilding and navigation. Then it’s time for dinner.

This big, bustling, bi-level restaurant has a great view of the harbor and a new chef in the kitchen: Heather West, winner of Season 2 of “Hell’s Kitchen” and a Port Jefferson native. She characterized the new menu as “casual fine dining with an emphasis on American seafood.” Case in point: West’s signature dish developed on “Hell’s Kitchen,” of seared sea bass over grilled asparagus with popped cherry-tomato sauce.

The Pie is one of a very few Long Island pizzerias with a coal-fueled oven, and the pies that issue from that inferno are terrific. The crusts have real integrity, puffy but substantial and not too tender. There are some complicated pies on the menu — including Buffalo and barbecue chicken — but you can hardly do better than the simplest, the textbook Margherita. Plenty of appetizers, salads and pastas, too.

One of the best places in Suffolk County to buy cheese, C’est Cheese is also a charming bistro with a predictably cheese-centric menu. There are dozens of cheese plates to choose from, as well as salads and sandwiches such as these grilled selections: the Parisian (Brie, apple and honey), the Capra (goat cheese, fig preserve and greens), the Big Blue (blue cheese, raspberry-cranberry relish) and the Classic (“lots of melted Cheddar, nothing else”). Lots of good beers on tap and wines by the glass, too.
