Duryea's Lobster Deck
There may be no better place to enjoy a lobster than at Duryea's Lobster Deck, a no-frills establishment consisting of a wooden deck overlooking Fort Pond Bay and a small kitchen from which issue the lobsters and related fare. There are no waiters, no decor, no wine list, no credit cards. Just exquisitely fresh, perfectly steamed lobsters, home-made cole slaw and potato salad, clam chowder, broiled fish (plus hamburgers and hot dogs for the kids). Bring a bottle of rose, watch the sun set, bliss out completely.
The "restaurant" is an offshoot of Perry B. Duryea & Son, a wholesale seafood business which has been dealing in live Maine and Canadian lobster, fresh fish, Long Island hard clams and Maine shellfish for 80 years. Also on the premises is a small retail market where you can buy lobsters, fish as well as prepared soups.
Lobster roll: At this lobster pound, the lobster salad (lobster meat, herb mayonnaise and celery) comes on lightly toasted French bread and, at $18.95, is paired with coleslaw, plus a choice of potato chips or potato salad. The bottom line? You're eating freshly caught lobster at an outdoor picnic table, making it not just a lobster roll but an experience.
