Energy Kitchen: First bites

The energy level was high the afternoon I stopped into the new Energy Kitchen in Syosset. Scarfing down burgers, shakes, salads and wraps — nothing over 500 calories — was a polyglot crowd that looked to be a demographic cross-section of Long Island.
My Tex-Mex turkey burger on a whole wheat bun was juicy, well seasoned and topped with low-fat American cheese, guacamole and salsa. At 394 calories, it was surprisingly satisfying and substantial. ”Fries” were actually baked crinkle cut potatoes, which, unfortunately, were lukewarm. Another side dish — an edamame and corn salad — needed a bit more seasoning. On the other hand, a Thai chicken wrap was a rousing success, 414 calories well spent.
Energy Kitchen is at 170 Jericho Tpke., Syosset, 516-864-0400.
