The folks at FeelGoods Café in St. James took first place in the new-product competition at last week’s New York Restaurant & Foodservice Show at the Javits Center. Their winning entry was the vegetarian “EdgyBurger,” the cafe’s signature item.

FeelGoods’ Nicole Lawrence and Kathy Gerdes characterize the EdgyBurger as the “veggie burger with an edge.”

What I like about the EdgyBurger is that it is not one of those patties made of some undistinguishable meatless filler. Each of the 14 flavors (among them, quinoa-butternut squash, sweet potato-spinach, cauliflower-Parmesan-quinoa, pumpkin-chickpea, two bean-corn) has real integrity. See all the flavors here.

Lawrence and Gerdes say they are  working on making the EdgyBurger available via mail order and at other retail establishments.  Each 6-ounce burger is $4 and, if you buy four, you get one free.

FeelGoods Café is at 412 N. Country Rd., St, James, 631-390-8545, feelgoodscafe.com.

The quinoa-butternut squash EdgyBurger really tastes like quinoa and butternut squash.
