Where can you see a 10-year-old performing jazz on the same stage as an 86-year-old?

At the ninth annual summer jazz concert Wednesday night at Northport Library. The event features Ranny Reeve — a legendary jazz pianist, composer and teacher — along with his students and professional musicians.

More than 150 people are expected to attend the event, presented by the Northport Arts Coalition.

“The people respond to it. We give them something they want to hear. We have a lot of fun doing it,” says Reeve, 86, of Coram.

About 25 musicians will play a variety of jazz, improvisational and original pieces on piano, clarinet, bass, trumpet and other instruments. Reeve will also share some of his new compositions.

The concert format is akin to Reeve’s “Jazz in the Living Room” monthly series at Mills Pond House in St. James, where students and professional musicians have played improvisational jazz tunes the past nine years. Each musician plays a short solo and later joins in with others to play chords.

“Some are superb professionals and others are kids from my clinics. I mix them all up. It’s a family night,” Reeve says of the concert. “It’s priceless. They’ve all got an audience.”

So why come?

“To hear a variety of jazz,” Reeve says. “Music makes the world a better place … Just come sit back and swing!”
