Recently, when Alissa Zipperian needed help making a birthday cake for son, she brought in "Bakng Coach" Lisa Basini to her Smithtown home. On this day, Basini, left, was showing Zipperian, right, how to make a yellow cake with chocolate frosting. Basini has created a successful business out of going to people's homes to teach them the art of baking. (March 3, 2010) Credit: Newsday/John Paraskevas

Lisa Basini assumed the role of “the baking coach” in 2005. It was the Smithtown resident’s firm belief that “the best place to learn how to bake is right in your own kitchen,” and so she established a business whose core was custom-designed classes taught in her clients’ homes.

Five years later, her company employs 10 coaches. “Most of the time we’re teaching the basics — how to make a cake from scratch, pies, breads, cake decorating,” she said. The cost is $79 an hour for the first two hours, then $59 an hour thereafter.
