A warm summer evening, an outdoor theater, a leading local chef making magic with tomatoes. If this sounds as idyllic to you as it does to me, The Smithtown Historical Society has an event for you:

On Tuesday, Stephen Gallagher, chef-owner of The Trattoria in St. James, will use the bounty of local tomatoes as a starting point for a cooking-demo class. He’ll be preparing a salad of local heirlooms, gazpacho and more, along with providing tomato techniques, tips and tastes. The Trattoria has been in the top tier of Italian restaurants on Long Island since it opened in 2013.

The Smithtown Historical Society is a 22-acre pastoral property, bordered by historic barns and cottages. During the pandemic, the organization erected an outdoor theater which has become the stage for its “Cooking with the Stars” series whose headliners have included Marco Pellegrini and Sabrino Vallorina of Osteria Umbra and town supervisor Ed Wehrheim. Chef Gallagher will close out the series for 2022.

Tickets are $20 for members of the Smithtown Historical Society, $25 for non-members.

The event starts at 6 p.m. Tickets are available online at eventbrite.com.

The Smithtown Historical Society is at 239 East Main St., Smithtown, 631-265-6768, smithtownhistorical.org
