Cinco de Mayo 2014 on Long Island

When it comes to holidays that inspire bars, clubs and other nightlife-friendly spots to throw special events, Cinco de Mayo is a generally solid occasion for celebrations. But with the 2014 observance of the Mexican army's victory in the Battle of Puebla in 1862 landing on a Monday, it seems likely that the overall Long Island Cinco de Mayo party calendar will end up somewhat lighter than in previous years.

Nonetheless, there are still some local fiestas to consider:

WHERE: Surf’s Out, 1 Bay Walk, Kismet, 631-583-7400

THE DEAL: This Fire Island fun spot is throwing its annual Cuatro De Mayo party, which actually starts a day early, Sunday, May 4. Tickets purchased for this four-hour bash (1:30 to 5:30 p.m.) include tap beer, sangria, margaritas, music by a mariachi band, piñatas and a buffet – but no worries if you don't live in Kismet, as a return ferry voucher is also included in the fee. Tickets are available in advance for $50 at surfsout.com (or for $55 at the door).

THE DEAL: To start a new series of weekly get-togethers – to be called Hurricane Mondays – this riverside spot with a man-made beach and fire pit will be doing specials on margaritas, tequila and Corona beer on Monday, May 5, starting at 5 p.m. DJ Vic Latino is scheduled to spin.

OTHER OPTIONS

The LIRR will come in handy for heading  to a couple of specific Cinco de Mayo parties in Nassau County come Monday, May 5, as trains stop directly across the street from Mulcahy's Pub & Concert Hall in Wantagh, at 3232 Railroad Ave., (516-783-7500) and around the corner from El Mariachi in Rockville Centre at 213 Sunrise Hwy. (516-536-6661).

Mulcahy’s is advertising drink specials, prizes and a taco bar from 3 to 5 p.m., while Mariachi is offering $5 margaritas all day plus giveaways, its usual menu of Mexican food and live music from members of the classic dance and soca band Copycat from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m.
