Actor Matthew Broderick has starred in several plays, films and TV shows, but when it comes to his defining role, the 1986 motion picture “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” may forever own that distinction.

Broderick’s turn as a teen who could outsmart anybody that might have stood in the way of his enjoying the greatest day of hooky in cinematic history has remained respected and popular — especially due to the creative efforts of the movie’s late writer-director (and ’80s film master craftsman) John Hughes. Starring as Ferris, Broderick spends the duration of the flick duping his parents, his high school’s principal and other various people while leading two of his friends on an adventure that also serves as a love letter to the city of Chicago.

Fans can find it via home media platforms or occasionally running on cable TV, but catching an elder work like “Ferris” rolling in an actual theater is a veritable challenge — however, for those who'd like to see Broderick/Bueller’s legendary school-cutting caper on a big screen, the YMCA Boulton Center for the Performing Arts in Bay Shore (37 W. Main St., 631-969-1101) will be showing it in such fashion on Wednesday, Sept. 24 at 7:30 p.m.

The screening is being done in conjunction with The Cortland, a pub located next door to the Boulton (27 W. Main St., 631-206-2220) that is known for presenting unique events — and being that the bar is involved with this venture, those attending can purchase locally sourced craft beers (from the Great South Bay, Fire Island and Blue Point brewing companies) to enjoy while watching. Once the movie has wrapped (and be sure to stay past the credits to see the piece’s brief-but-iconic final scene), The Cortland will then host an after-party featuring musician J-Haus playing until late.
