‘Game of Thrones’ beer: Brewery Ommegang creates brews inspired by HBO show in Cooperstown

Cooperstown finally will welcome Mike Piazza to the Hall of Fame, so baseball fans can celebrate the nearby Brewery Ommegang with a clear conscience and a full glass.

Ommegang produces Belgian-style brews. If you’re devoted to “Game of Thrones,” Ommegang has made several ales in a collaboration series that are suitably dramatic. They come with names such as Fire and Blood, Three-Eyed Raven, Take the Black Stout, Iron Throne and Valar Morghulis, which viewers will know may be translated as “all men must die.”

Imbibers with an affection for dragons and Emilia Clarke’s Daenerys Targaryen will be attracted by Fire and Blood, an amber red ale that takes in ancho chilies and rye. It’s malty, with a shot of spice. Iron Throne is a pleasing blond ale with a citrus accent; Three-Eyed Raven, a dark saison ale; and Valar Morghulis, a dubbel ale, malty, a bit dry, with notes of caramel.

Ommegang’s year-rounders are led by the ruby-brown Three Philosophers, a complex quadruple ale, finished with Liefmans Kriek, the Belgian cherry ale. It’s loaded with dark fruit, and full-flavored with hints of brown sugar and raisins. Wine drinkers will enjoy this brew. Abbey Ale, a dubbel ale, has a burgundy hue and suggestions of caramel and ripe fruit. The Abbey Ale was patterned after the grand brews made by Trappist monks in Belgium.

Ommegang’s ales sell on Long Island in the $10-to-$15 range for a 750-ml bottle. Superstar Beverage in Huntington Station is among the spots where some are available.

These brews age well. Just like Piazza’s statistics.
