Friendly’s, the once ubiquitous ice-cream-and-burger chain, has struggled in recent years as shiny new fast-food spots have popped up in shopping centers and strip malls. In 2014, franchisee J and B Restaurant Partners of Long Island closed 11 locations, no doubt leaving Fribble lovers from Massapequa to Patchogue in mourning.

But the 80-year-old company is intent on making a comeback nationwide and locally, with a refreshed menu and a new look. Classics like the Fishamajig, Friendly’s SuperMelt Sandwiches and the Big-Two-Do have been updated to include higher quality ingredients, according to the chain. One by one, restaurants are being given a bright, clean, retro diner look.

To celebrate recent remodels in Commack and Sayville, Friendly’s will welcome back diners with an old-fashioned bargain: An Original Burger and 10-ounce Fribble shake for $2.

The Commack Friendly’s (which originally opened in 1981) will offer the special from Thursday, Dec. 10 through Thursday Dec. 17. The Sayville location (open since 1975) will offer it from the 17th through the 24th. The burger and shake may have been updated, but the price is classic.
