Let others specialize in soup dumplings, elevate dim sum or bring in every Asian cuisine on the map. At Uncle Dai's, the themes are Sichuan and Hunan, the style from decades gone by.

The veteran eatery does look a bit worn these days. But the brisk service stays the same. And the Chinese cuisine definitely is untouched.

There's respectable hot noodles with with sesame sauce. The "hot" refers to the temperature of the dish, not to spicing. Ask for it searing and you might get a polite tingle. The dependable main dishes include the familiar sesame chicken, tender and good; and eggplant with garlic sauce. Orange beef is overly sweet and far from spicy; chicken the same way fares better.

Canned pineapple chunks and a few wedges of orange arrive with your fortune cookies. The cookies are upbeat.

For the record, Uncle Dai's does have pad Thai and miso soup.
