Long Islanders know a good thing when they see one, and often that’s as close as a local farm stand. Pull off the road, and before you know it, you’ll be mesmerized by the season’s first asparagus, radishes and young, tender salad greens. Soon there will be corn and tomatoes, peaches and melons, followed by a stately progression of the apples, pears and hard squashes of fall. Add in extras such as local seafood, eggs, cheeses, baked goods and flowers, then give in to the pleasure of cooking and eating completely in the moment. Now, yes, it’s true that most of these listings are farther east (Suffolk is one of the top-ranked agricultural counties in the state) — but what a great reason to go for a drive. Bring a cooler and have fun!
