Halal food meets Subway-style service at the Halal-N-Out restaurant-deli, which opened in December in New Hyde Park.
Halal-N-Out serves traditional Mediterranean meat and seafood dishes, as well as American Philly cheesesteaks, hamburgers and subs made with halal salami, pastrami, bologna and other cold cuts.
“It’s for people that can’t go to Subway because it doesn’t serve halal meat, as well as anybody who wants to try traditional halal food,” says owner Asad Mayan, 27.
Mayan says the menu is influenced by recipes his parents brought here when they immigrated from their native Afghanistan. “The red and green hot sauce is from my grandmother’s special recipes,” says Mayan, a Nassau County resident. Mayan, who started working in Queens halal restaurants since age 15, had long dreamed of opening his own place.
“I’m a food fanatic myself and wanted to share the food I myself love,” Mayan says.
Chicken, lamb, steak, breaded whiting (or a combination of the latter) over plain or spicy basmati rice costs $6.99. The price covers toppings such as chickpeas, sliced cucumbers and jalapeño peppers. Customers can also flavor their food with yogurt-based white sauce. For drinks there are milkshakes in 12 flavors, including banana pudding and blueberry cheese ($4.99).
Halal-N-Out is open daily, 10 a.m. to 1 a.m.
