As you surely know, Saturday, March 28, is Something on a Stick Day, a time set aside to celebrate, well, foods eaten off sticks. Things like ice cream pops, corn dogs, toasted marshmallows — and almost anything threaded onto a wooden skewer and grilled.
Thinking along global lines, we give you five Long Island restaurants, each serving something on a stick from a different part of the world.
A roster of “Japanese skewers,” also known as kushiyaki, includes such items as bacon-wrapped scallops, Japanese sausage, white tuna and chicken (also known as yakitori); two wooden skewers to an order. ($4-$6)
1932 Jericho Tpke. East Northport, 631-486-8900
From Mexico come alambres, skewers of marinated grilled steak, chicken, vegetables or shrimp. Served as an entree platter. ($9.50-$10.50)
611 Old Country Rd., Westbury, 516- 280-7795
What the menu at this counter-serve spot calls “sticks” are actually wooden skewers of Greek-style marinated grilled poultry, seafood and meat. Try the moist chunks of swordfish, velvety filet mignon and juicy pork. ($5-$8)
1008 Willis Ave., Albertson, 516-621-9300
It's worth seeking out this hidden Mediterranean-Middle Eastern eatery for Persian-style marinated grilled meat, poultry and seafood on wooden sticks. Chicken, shrimp, salmon and lamb are just some of the varieties. ($3-$375 a skewer)
46 Gerard St., Huntington 631-923-0448
PHO MAXIA VIETNAMESE RESTAURANT
At this little Vietnamese spot, satays, featuring beef or chicken threaded onto wooden skewers and chargrilled, are served with peanut sauce. ($5.95)
817 Carman Ave., Westbury, 516-414-1738
