Hempstead: Value meal at V&T
When I find myself in Garden City, as I did this morning, it is almost impossible for me not to stop at V&T Market in Hempstead on my way back to the office in Melville. And, strictly speaking, it’s not really on my way back.
V&T was Long Island’s first and remains its most comprehensive Asian supermarket. It also houses a food court with Chinatown-style takeout. Today I got two “over rice” boxes. One contained piles of stir-fried bok choy, baby bok choy and green beans with fried tofu. The other, at least a pound of roasted meat, about evenly split between chicken and pork (char siu).
This mountain of delicious food—easily enough for four—cost $10. If there is a better deal on Long Island, I don't know about it.
V&T Market is at 12 N. Franklin St., Hempstead, 516-481-1133.
