Born anew in East Hampton: Highway Diner & Bar
The former Highway Diner & Bar in East Hampton, which had been replaced this past summer by Shuko, a pop-up version of a Manhattan Japanese restaurant, has reopened. Well, sort of. As manager Nelly Moudime explained it, the place is under different ownership with new chefs and a new menu. The original name stays. “We felt like keeping some kind of continuity to make people feel comfortable,” Moudime said.
The menu was designed by Manhattan-based consulting chefs Arnie Sastry and Mark Grogan. In the kitchen is chef de cuisine Justin Finney, who previously cooked at Rowdy Hall in East Hampton. On the menu: chicken soup with house-made noodles ($9), crabcake ($13), salade Nicoise ($16), linguine with fresh local clams ($12 small; $23 large), house-made chicken potpie ($16), cheeseburger ($15) and chicken zucchini burger ($16).
Right now, the place is open Wednesday to Sunday for dinner, and this weekend it is to launch a Saturday and Sunday lunch service. Breakfast should kick in at a later date, Moudime said.
Highway Diner & Bar is at 290 Montauk Hwy., East Hampton, 631-527-5372, highwaydinerandbar.com.
