The new Hoshi Sushi & Hibachi in Patchogue is a dining spot both spacious and stylish. There are two separate areas, one with hibachi tables, manned by effusive and dexterous chefs, the other, quieter space, filled with tables and booths.

Dramatic lighting is everywhere — even inside the chirashi bowl. While the array of raw fish over rice is attractively presented, the mix is trivialized by the presence of surimi and cooked shrimp. And what's that little glowing object doing? Nothing useful, for sure.

Highlights of the rest of the meal include delicate vegetable gyoza, a first rate peanut avocado roll loaded with nuts and, from the hibachi, a colorful, if somewhat unexciting stir-fry of vegetables. Chicken yaki soba, though, is undercut by pieces of poultry that tasted reheated. But  a sushi assortment — ordered with finfish only — proves impeccably fresh.

Hoshi Sushi  & Hibachi is at 35 W. Main St., Patchogue, 631-627-8090.
