It is challenge enough to open a new restaurant, especially one situated on a minor thoroughfare deep in industrial territory. The new Hudson House Kitchen & Bar in East Farmingdale, though, is facing an extra roadblock. Literally.

The restaurant is located on New Highway between Sherwood Ave. and Gazza Blvd., and right now, there’s major road work being done smack in front, impeding access from the north from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday to Friday.

“It’s almost like a practical joke,” said owner Nick Hannides (former owner of the departed Graffiti in Woodbury), who looks forward to the work ending. That may happen sometime within about two weeks, when repairs to the section of highway in front of the restaurant are completed. So says Jack Figuerido, project engineer for Cashin Associates, the engineering company doing construction management for the Town of Babylon. Figuerido said that the entire project, which will gradually move northward up New Highway, is slated to wrap up sometime in June.

Meanwhile, anyone wishing to go to the restaurant can access it by taking Route 110 to Sherwood Ave., which intersects New Highway just south of the parking lot. If approaching Hudson House on New Highway from the north, try asking one of the construction workers for passage.

You'll be rewarded for making the effort, as learned when a friend made a takeout run from the office and brought back a vibrant chopped salad ($9.95) made with greens, chick peas, roasted red peppers, cucumbers, olives, red onion tomatoes and hearts of palm, accompanied by a verdant herb vinaigrette — and not the cliche balsamic. My friend's fine Cobb salad was made with big shreds of roast chicken.

As long as the road work continues, Hudson House is offering a 15 percent discount during lunch and dinner Monday to Wednesday.
